If there's such a thing as a rising star in social media, it's definitely Pinterest. On its second year, this social media platform is making huge splashes in the marketplace as it bypasses giants such as Google and Facebook in terms of traffic referrals and shopping engagement respectively.
According to Shareaholic, which has been tracking Pinterest traffic for 2011, the rising social media star drives more referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube combined. The huge spike that Pinterest has acquired in a span of 3 months is very impressive and is indicative of the platform's efficiency in e-commerce. What would be interesting to observe is how marketers could leverage this booming trend into an effective digital strategy.
As if that's not enough good news, Pinterest also tops social media giant, Facebook in terms of shopping engagement. According to a recent survey by Bizrate Insights, 70% of Pinterest users would turn to the platform for inspiration on what to buy compared to only 17% for Facebook. Although Facebook still boasts of its recent acquisition of its massive one billion users, what is attractive about Pinterest is its efficiency for brands who are focused in developing their e-commerce strategies.
Furthermore, it would also be interesting to find out how this rising star fairs against actual e-commerce sites such as eBay and Amazon, but until then, it seems that this pinboard is doing everything right. According to Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann, the secret in its growth can be attributed to marketing.
How about you? Do you feel the same way about Pinterest? What's the first place that comes to mind for your online shopping experience?
